History of La Cistérniga

La Cistérniga, located in the province of Valladolid, boasts a rich history dating back to the Copper Age with archaeological findings at the Cerro de La Calderona. During antiquity, it was under the dominion of the Vacceos, a Celtiberian group, until it was conquered by Hannibal in the 3rd century BC. Its origins are linked to significant communication routes, such as the Royal Route of Soria and the Roman road from Valladolid to Tudela de Duero.

Throughout the centuries, the town has experienced various notable historical events, like the passage of Álvaro de Luna in 1454 and being granted by Philip II in 1596 the status of being a “Suburb of the city of Valladolid”. After several attempts, in 1851 it managed to break away from Valladolid and establish itself as an independent municipality.

During the 20th century, La Cistérniga faced economic and political challenges, including the repercussions of the Spanish Civil War. However, since the late 20th century, it underwent a significant transformation, evolving from a town with an artisan and rural base to an industrial and services hub, with notable demographic growth and urban development.
